Parent & Tot (3 years old)

This class is 30 minutes in length.  The program is designed to build the basics of dance.  The elements taught are: rhythm, basic ballet movements, coordination, creativity, working as a group and discipline.  The parents are asked to be active participants in class for approximately 4 classes and then are asked to sit aside and observe their child’s progress in our large viewing area. It is a perfect way to begin ballet training. Participating in the year-end show depends on Melissa Kelly's assessment.

Dance wear requirements:
- Canvas pink ballet shoes / split sole
- Pink puff sleeve leotard with attached skirt
- Pink ballet tights / full sole

 
Creative Ballet (ages 4-5)

This class is 45 minutes in length.  The program is designed to build upon the skills learnt in the Parent and Tot program.  The knowledge of ballet movements and rhythm is expanded, always maintaining a creative edge. Students in this class will participate in our year-end recital.

Dance wear requirements:
- Canvas pink ballet shoes / split sole
- Pink puff sleeve leotard with attached skirt
- Pink ballet tights / full sole

 
Ballet (ages 6+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length depending on the level.  Ballet is the base of all dance styles and it is highly encouraged that students partake in a ballet class to better their other disciplines.  The Cecchetti method is taught and exams are an option for students who are eligible.  The skills are first trained at the barre, then carry on to the centre for allegro work, pirouettes, adagios and travelling exercises.  We always complete the class with révérence.

Dance wear requirements:
- Canvas pink ballet shoes / split sole
- Colored tank leotard (depending on the level)
- Black pull-on skirt
- Pink ballet tights / full sole

 
Pointe (minimum of 11 years of age)

This class is added to the last 30 minutes or 45 minutes of the regular ballet class.  Only students who have been assessed by Melissa Kelly can partake in this class.  Not every student’s feet are ready for pointe and it is dangerous to do so if the student’s technique is lacking in certain areas.  Posture, ankles, body alignment, balance and strength are all very important components when assessing a student for this style.

Dance wear requirements:
- Pointe shoes provided by The National Ballet School (The Shoe Room) / Fitted by Melissa Kelly
- Colored tank leotard (depending on level)
- Black pull-on skirt
- Pink ballet tights / convertible

 
Jazz (ages 5+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1.5 hours in length.  Following the CDTA syllabus, jazz is a style of dance that is strong, powerful, high energy and very technical.  The style that best compliments jazz is ballet.  Many technical points from ballet are used in jazz.

Dance wear requirements:
- Beige slip-on jazz shoes
- Black leotard (any style) or Crop-Top
- Capri pants (any color)
- Dance shorts (optional)

 
Tap (ages 5+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length.  Following the CDTA syllabus, tap is a style of dance perfect for students who want to learn rhythm, coordination and intricate foot work.  Tap can be compared to drums; it’s like playing drums with your feet, creating sounds and exciting rhythms. Tap shoes are required for this style.

Dance wear requirements:
- Black velcro tap shoes or buckle (depending on level)
- Black tank leotard (any style)
- Capri pants (any color)
- Dance shorts (any color)

 
Hip Hop (ages 6+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length. Hip Hop is a style that focuses on beat, rhythm, freestyle and coordination, incorporating the entire body.  Using funk and your own style, it is a type of dance that came to us from New York City and Los Angeles.  At MKDA, we introduce all types of hip hop forms such as: Krump, House, Old School and Break Dancing.

Dance wear requirements:
- Any loose clothing / Dress funky & trendy! / No jeans!
- No obscene logos or slogans on t-shirts
- Hats and bandanas are accepted (as long as they don’t become distracting)
- Hip Hop sneakers (black) or Combat boots

 
Separate all-boys hip hop class

This class is 45 minutes to 1 hour in length.  We incorporate all elements of hip hop dancing with an emphasis on strong, male movements.  This class is aimed for boys ages 9-12.

Dance wear requirements:
- Any loose clothing / Dress funky & trendy! / No jeans!
- No obscene logos or slogans on t-shirts
- Hats, bandanas and crop tops are accepted (as long as they don’t become distracting)
- Hip Hop sneakers

 
Acrobatics (7+)

These classes are 1.25 to 1.5 hours in length.  This program is designed to promote excellence in tumbling, flexibility, strength, balance, contortion, and partner/group stunting for dancers.  Through the Acrobatics Arts syllabus, students will learn countless techniques and movements while using dance to enhance their performance.  It is required that students taking Acrobatics must register for a ballet and/or jazz class, as many components of ballet and jazz are incorporated in Acrobatics.

Dance wear requirements:
- Bare feet and hair must be tied up in low ponytail.  Hair MUST be out of the face.
- Dance shorts or capris
- Leotard (any colour)
or
- Tight fitting dance top

 
Contemporary

These classes are all 1 hour in length.  Contemporary means NEW MOVEMENT and it embodies twisted lines, use of different levels, exciting movement vocabulary and creativity.

Dance wear requirements:
- Bare feet or foot undeez
- Dance shorts, dance capris and/or jazz pants
- Dance tank top, t-shirt and/or leotard

 
Couples Dancing

This class is 1 hour in length.  Every year, the style changes in order to add versatility and diversity.  Throughout the years we have explored, Salsa, Rumba, Jive, Swing, Waltz, Tango, Merengue and Cha Cha. Due to popular demand, our 2017-2018 dance season will feature Country Dancing once again.

Dance wear requirements:
Ladies:
- Brown Cowboy boots
- Comfortable clothing
- To start the year:  May wear low heeled shoes
Men:
- Brown Cowboy boots
- Comfortable clothing
- To start the year:  Dress shoes

 
Adult Hip Hop


This class is 1 hour in length.
-Hip Hop is a style that focuses on beat, rhythm, freestyle and coordination, incorporating the entire body.  Using funk and your own style, it is a type of dance that came to us from New York City and Los Angeles.  At MKDA, we also incorporate House dancing in all hip hop classes that are Intermediate and above.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is a form of theatre that combines songs, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of the piece are communicated through the music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Students will be expected to learn lines from a song by heart and coordinate the acting, dance and lip syncing in the choreography.

Heels Class for Teens (ages 13-18)

This class will teach dancers how to properly walk and dance in heels. Dancing in heels is a skill on its own and is a crucial part of the dance industry. This class is jazz based and is meant to strengthen postural alignment, core and ankles.

Dance wear requirements:
-Black high heel boots or shoes that support the ankle (at least 2” in height). No thick, block heel. Thin block heel is recommended.
-Yoga top or tight fitting shirt
-Yoga pants or capris recommended

 
Aerial Silks (ages 9+)

Silks is a graceful art of challenging climbs, wraps and poses while hanging from long, flowing pieces of fabric. This artistic form of dance will give dancers concrete knowledge in timing, precision and aerial awareness. Applying these circus skills to your child’s silks training, will teach them how their dance abilities can transition into aerial performances.

Dance wear requirements:
-Bare feet
-Dance shorts or capris
-Leotard (any color) or crop top.
-No loose t-shirts or pants!
-Hair must be tied up in low ponytail
