Tot Ballet (3 years old)

This class is 30 minutes in length.  The program is designed to build the basics of dance.  The elements taught are: rhythm, basic ballet movements, coordination, creativity, working as a group and discipline. It is a perfect way to begin ballet training. Our Tot Ballet dancers participate in the year-end recital.

Ballet (ages 6+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length depending on the level.  Ballet is the base of all dance styles and it is highly encouraged that students partake in a ballet class to better their other disciplines.  The Cecchetti method of ballet is taught, and all classes are based on the Cecchetti syllabus. The skills are first trained at the barre, then carry on to the centre for allegro work, pirouettes, adagios and travelling exercises.  We always complete the class with révérence.

Jazz (ages 5+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1.5 hours in length.  Following the CDTA syllabus, jazz is a style of dance that is strong, powerful, high energy and very technical.  The style that best compliments jazz is ballet.  Many technical points from ballet are used in jazz.

Hip Hop (ages 6+)

These classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length. Hip Hop is a style that focuses on beat, rhythm, freestyle and coordination, incorporating the entire body.  Using funk and your own style, it is a type of dance that came to us from New York City and Los Angeles. At MKDA, we pride ourselves on the quality of our hip hop program and, we also offer a separate All-Boys hip hop class.

Contemporary (11+)

These classes are all 1 hour in length.  Contemporary means NEW MOVEMENT and it embodies twisted lines, use of different levels, exciting movement vocabulary and creativity.

Musical Theatre (9+)

Musical Theatre is a form of theatre that combines songs, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of the piece are communicated through the music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Students will be expected to learn lines from a song by heart and coordinate the acting, dance and lip syncing in the choreography. It is required that students taking Musical Theatre must register for a ballet and/or jazz class, as many components of ballet and jazz are incorporated in Musical Theatre.
